Kicking’ It Around for November 11, 2010
Game 1: Ryan & Brian vs. Diablitos
RGVSSC KICKBALL – Thursday, November 11 would be a night of celebration for several individuals and a night of fun, exciting kickball for all. In the early game of the evening we would have Ryan & Brian’s Closers taking on Diablitos. For The Closers, Brian and Tania were celebrating their 5 year anniversary of wedding bliss. Knocking on wood they would play to get a win and get their night off to a great start. Do you Brian and Tania take this red kickball to have and to hold and to kick it this night forward? We do! And they did, as combined on the night the 2 lovebirds went 3-5 kicking with 2 RKI’s and a run scored to lead their team to a hard fought 4-1 victory over the red Diablitos.
“It’s very special to get a win on my anniversary,” Tania happily said after the game. The win would push The Closers up to 6 points in the standings, good enough for a tie for 3rd place with 2 more weeks worth of games to go before the playoffs.
The first run of the game would come from Tania in the 2nd inning. With Tania and Ryan on base after each kicking a single, Celina went up and successfully kick them both in for a 2-0 lead. In the 3rd inning it would be more of the same as 2 more runs would come in to make it 4-0. These 2 runs came off a double kicked by lovebird Brian that allowed both Danielle and James to score.
What’s love got to do with it may have been what the Diablitos were thinking. They would attempt to crash the wedding anniversary party most notably in the 5th inning. Here they would string together some good kicks and had several players get on base. Where’s the Beef Chris would get across home plate after a kick from Erik to narrow the lead to 4-1. Though the effort was there, unfortunately that would be as close they’d get. The final score would stay at 4-1 in favor of Tania and Brian’s Closers squad.
For the Diablitos, they will remain in the middle of the playoff hunt with their 4 points. They’ll look to get back to winning next week when they take on the Ball Busters at 6:30pm. Tonight’s notable performances would come from Erik who led the way going perfect 2-2 kicking with an RKI and from Omar who went 2-3 kicking. Contributing kicks were Hector, Ruben, Arely (who didn’t lose a nail this game) and Huddle.
From The Closers, toasting their lovebirds with their play were James and Ryan, each having 2 hits and scoring a run, with other good kicks coming from Victoria, Celina, Jim Bob and Danielle. Happy anniversary! Next week they’ll be back at it when they take on the 21st Amendments at 8:00pm.
Game 2: Angelitos vs. 21st Amendments
RGVSSC KICKBALL – The night of celebration would continue into the 2nd game of the evening with Angelitos matched up against the 21st Amendments. In this one, having his birthday fall on November 11 was Fidel of Angelitos. What would his team respond with for the birthday boy? They would kick 3 homeruns on the night and explode out for 5 runs in the 3rd inning to gift wrap a 7-0 victory for him. Fidel himself rose up to kick a perfect 3-3 for the game and score a run of his own to contribute to his teams win over the Amendments.
Kicking the first homerun of the game in the 1st inning was Justin to put Angelitos up 1-0. He would actually have 2 leadoff homeruns overall, the 2nd coming in the 3rd inning. Up kicking again in the 4th, he’d go to put the bow on the beautiful present of his performance by hoping to get a 3rd homerun, only to be foiled when his long ball into the outfield was snatched out of the sky by Nikki of the Amendments.
Steven of Angelitos was next to score a run for Fidel and his birthday in the 2nd inning. He’d score on an RKI single from Ceci to put the team up 2-0. For the game Steven was only a homerun short of kicking for the cycle as he’d follow up his triple in the 2nd with a double in the 3rd and a single in the 6th.
The 5th inning was where the birthday fireworks really lit up the scoreboard. It began with Justin’s 2nd homerun, then it had Edgar kicking in the birthday boy with a 2 run homerun blast and wrapped up with Ceci getting credit for 2 more RKI’s on her sacrifice kick. The inning would end on a pop fly out by Joey, who shall be noted was pretty much the only Angelitos player who did not contribute offensively to Fidel’s birthday game. After the game all he could muster to say in his shame was “I’m a disgrace. I don’t even deserve to be on the team,” as he ran out of the park. Angelitos will decide this week whether or not to renew his 10-day contract. With these 5 runs scored we reached what would prove to be our final score of 7-0.
In the other dugout, the 21st Amendments stayed in the game with their cool, calm and collected style. They would tighten up defensively after the 3rd inning to prevent Angelitos from seriously threatening with another run. Offensively they’d strand 2 runners in the 2nd inning, 3 in the 5th in a bases loaded situation and 2 more in the 6th inning to come up just short of scoring. Just one more kick here or there and the liquor would have flowed in rivers from the busted birthday party kegs. Of note, Pat wore no special head ornamentation in this game so that may or may not have been a factor. Just saying. Going down kicking well were Matt, Elizabeth and Nikki all at 2-3. Additional kicks came from Annie, Tom and Angela. Next week, November 18th, the 21st Amendments will play at 8:00pm when they take on Ryan & Brian’s Closers.
After the game Fidel was bathed in a fluorescent silly string shower as Angelitos celebrated their win that moved them up to 6 points in the standing and 3rd place. They have 2 more games remaining before the playoffs begin in December. Next week they’ll take on the always boisterous Kegs N Legs in the 7:00pm game. See everyone out there!
Other Games for 11/11/10:
The Expendables 4, Kegs N Legs 1
Bellini 6, La Familia 0

Kickin’ It Around for October 28, 2010
RGVSSC KICKBALL –No games were scheduled Thursday, October 28 due to RGVSSC’s scheduled Fall Pub Crawl. Therefore everyone had a week off to rest their kicking legs and come back strong for the second half of our exciting season. After 4 weeks played we have a logjam of teams with 2 points in our standings. Everything is still up in the air with 4 more weeks to go. Points accrued will determine the seedings we’ll use in the playoffs. Look for more information about that as we get closer to December. Here in November RGVSSC will be kicking balls for a good cause with the 2nd Annual Kickball Classic on Saturday, November 27th. This coed tournament will be held at Los Encinos Park in McAllen to benefit the Faith Family Friends Foundation. Please sign up your team for this worthwhile event by going to our website at www.rgvsportsandsocial.com as soon as possible. We’ll look forward to seeing you out there.
Looking at our Fall League standings right now we have all the teams on the board with a minimum of 2 points earned, with Bellini 7 and The Expendables as early leaders. The Kickball standings are:
Bellini 7 8 points (4-0-0)
The Expendables 8 points (4-0-0)
Diablitos 4 points (2-0-2)

Angelitos 2 points (1-0-2)
21st Amendments 2 points (1-0-2)
La Familia 2 points (1-0-3)
Ball Busters 2 points (1-0-3)
To remind you a win earns your team 2 points and a tie gets you 1 point. So far we’ve not had a tie in any of our games. On any given Thursday night any team can win, you just have to come out and play. And don’t forget to have fun, that’s why we do this. For fun let’s look a little bit at the team scoring stats here at the midpoint of the season.
The top 5 offensive scoring teams per game are:
1. The Expendables – 7.25 per game
2. Bellini 7 – 6.0 per game
3. Angelitos – 4.5 per game

Kickin’ It Around for October 21, 2010
Game 1: La Familia vs. 21st Amendments
RGVSSC KICKBALL – In the first game of the night for October 21st La Familia took on the 21st Amendments in some very windy weather conditions. Runs would be hard to come by in this one with the wind swirling and blowing inward it led to several walks, a lot of foul balls and more than a dozen pop fly outs. Overcoming the conditions to emerge from their great depression and earn their first victory of the season were the 21st Amendments. They would score 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning and then hold on precipitously the rest of the way for a 2-0 victory.
“We are really excited to win. We are improving every game. We just like to have fun,” Annie of the Amendments shared afterward. That’s a great attitude to have as this game would be a nail biter.
Scoring for the 21st Amendments in the 1st inning were Elizabeth off a kick by Justin and then Justin off a kick from captain’s hat Pat. With these runs coming so quickly it seemed like we’d have a high scoring affair but it didn’t turn out that way.
La Familia would tighten up defensively from then on to make the Amendments sweat it out all the way down to the last inning. In their pursuit of a win they would threaten to score almost every inning. In both the 2nd and 3rd innings La Familia loaded up the bases, only to just come up one kick short from getting a run across home plate. Pressing all game their last chance came in the bottom of the 7th. Martin would kick a single to get on base and Jesse would kick a double to push them both into scoring position, with only 1 out down. The stage was set for them to steal the game away.
“I’m nervous,” revealed Annie at that moment from her catcher’s position.
Fortunately, or unfortunately for La Familia, the 21st Amendments defense stiffened at that point to force the last 2 outs of the game and lock down their win. It’s not over until it’s over. Final score: 21st Amendments 2, La Familia 0.
With their first win the 21st Amendments earned 2 points to move up in the standings. Leading them kicking on the evening were Justin who went 3-3 with an RKI and a run scored, followed by Pat at 2-3 with the other RKI and Elizabeth 2-4 with the other run scored. Getting hits were Annie, Matt, Aaron and Jon. On the other side, La Familia were led offensively by Jesse who kicked 2-3. Hits also came from Jermaine, Sam, Mel and Martin.
Next week no games are scheduled due to the RGVSSC Fall Crawl. When we return to action on November 4th, we’ll have La Familia take on the unpredictable Kegs N Legs at 6:30pm and the 21st Amendments take on The Expendables at 7:30pm. I’ll be there, will you?!
Game 2: Bellini 7 vs. Kegs N Legs
RGVSSC KICKBALL – The October 21st late game would find Bellini 7 competing against Kegs N Legs for 2 more points in the standings. Who would step up under those Thursday night lights to shine and be the star of the night? Marco and Sergio of Bellini 7 could make strong cases with their solid performances but the one who stood out the most was … Khloe. Though she technically is not a part of either team’s lineup she literally ran circles around all 25 members of both teams. I’ll explain that in a bit. When the dust would settle at games end we’d find Bellini 7 coming out ahead 5-0 over the Keggers.
Bellini 7 would start off the scoring in the 1st inning with 2 runs from Marco and Sergio. They both would successfully push across home plate after a sacrifice pop fly from Smiley. Marco would extend the lead to 3-0 in the 3rd inning after another sacrifice fly, this time from Sergio. Kegs N Legs battled all game with their closest chance at scoring coming in the 3rd inning after a double from Fran the Man and a single from Red Dragon Mike. The wind was blowing pretty strong and they needed one more good kick to get a score but it wouldn’t happen for them.
With the score of 3-0 holding into the bottom of the 5th inning, that’s when Khloe made her appearance. She was literally unleashed onto the field to cause havoc and mayhem. RGVSSC kickball had never seen anything like her performance before. She had speed, moves, agility, elusiveness, tons of energy and a tail. … a tail? Khloe you see was a 10 pound white terrier doggie. And for 5 minutes or so the field was all hers, the game on hold as everyone attempted to catch her. She ran through the infield, out to the outfield and back, around the pitcher, down the base paths, around and around leaving Bellini team members and Keggers in her wake. No one could catch her and she wouldn’t leave the field. The scene was reminiscent of one of those rodeo ‘catch the greased pig’ contests. Finally Khloe would meet her match in Dante of Kegs N Legs as she ran down the 1st base line. His dive for her caught her in mid-stride to finally get her out. I guess we learned that Kickball can be too exciting to just watch from the sideline sometimes. RGVSSC kickball, it’s fantastic!
Back to the game we’d go to have Bellini 7 motivated from Khloe’s example. With 2 outs already, the first kicker up after her exit was Marco who kicked a double to left. Then following him was Sergio who showed his elusiveness with his 2 RKI inside the park homerun. That would get us to 5-0, our final score in favor of Bellini 7.
Statiscally Bellini 7 had solid performances from Marco at 3-3 kicking with 3 runs scored, Sergio 2-3 with the homerun 3 RKI’s and 2 runs scored and Smiley 2-3 with 2 RKI’s. Additional hits came from Bert and Jassi. For Kegs N Legs they had Fran the Man go 2-2 and Mike & Roxy go 1-2. After the Halloween break on November 4th Kegs N Legs will take on La Familia at 6:30pm. Bellini 7 will next see action on November 11 after their scheduled bye week.
Kickin’ It Around for October 7, 2010
Game 1: Ryan & Brian vs. Angelitos
RGVSSC KICKBALL – Coming off a narrow loss in week 1 and a bye last week, Angelitos came into their game Thursday, October 14 against Ryan & Brian’s Closers on a mission. That mission was to earn their first win in RGVSSC and get 2 points to move up in the standings. They would have to play virtually mistake free to do it, and they made it happen. Though the Closers put up a valiant effort they came out on the short end of the final 5-0 score.
“It feels great to get this win, we came together as a team and worked hard tonight,” said Justin of Angelitos.
He would be one of 3 runs Angelitos scored in the 2nd inning to go up 3-0 and never look back. All 3 runs would be the result of an angelic 3 RKI homerun from Edgar, who nearly ran down Karen in front of him on the base paths on his way home. Defense took over the middle section of the game as no runs were allowed by either team through the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. These 2 teams are very experienced so nothing was going to be easy. Jaime of the Closers caught at least 4 pop fly’s for outs over this period while Luper, Edgar and Justin caught a couple red balls each themselves for Angelitos. The lead though would grow for Angelitos to lock down the victory when insurance runs came in both the 6th and 7th final innings. These were from Fidel who scored on a single from Justin and in the 7th on a second homerun from Edgar as a solo run. Final score: Angelitos 5, Ryan & Brian 0.
Going down kicking well for the Closers in the game were Tania at 2-3, with additional hits coming from Xavi, Victoria, Danielle and Ryan. The Closers have a bye next week so we’ll have to wait to see them again in a couple weeks, surely reenergized and kicking strong. Angelitos were led offensively by Edgar’s 2 homeruns. He went 2-3 for the game, along with Joey and Justin with strong kicking performances. Contributing hits were Karen, Fidel and Cecilia. Next week Angelitos will push for a second win in RGVSSC when they take on Ball Busters at 7:00pm.
Looking forward Fidel said “On any given Thursday night, anyone can beat anyone. We have to be ready to play.”
Game 2: Diablitos vs. La Familia
RGVSSC KICKBALL – The competitive fires were burning bright in Game 2 of the evening when Diablitos took on La Familia in a battle of 1-1 teams. There would be no quit from either side as they combined for 25 hits from 18 different players. El Diablo Hector should have stopped, dropped and rolled as he went 3-3 kicking with a homerun and 4 RKI’s on the night. He was on fire. Behind his performance and his teams explosion of 4 runs in the first inning Diablitos would hold on to earn the win by the score of 6-3.
To the game action, La Familia would be the first team to score in the top of the 1st inning. P.J. would steal for home after a kick from Monica for the quick 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the inning Diablitos responded majorly with their 4 runs. Hector started the scoring with his 2 run homerun blast to take over the lead. Then pushing it out to 4-1 would be Ana scoring on a kick from Ruben and Ruben then scoring himself on the next kick from Paul. The 2 teams would trade runs over the remainder of the game as La Familia refused to concede defeat. They would get as close as 5-3 after an inside the park homerun from Jesse in the 4th inning and a bases loaded RKI single from Monica in the 6th inning. In the 7th they would go down kicking for the fences to end the game. Kevin kicked a ball deep into the outfield and nearly willed himself and Erica in front of him around the bases. Unfortunately the play at home plate didn’t go their way to end the game. No risk, no reward. And no quit in this game. Wrapping up the scoring from Diablitos would be Flaco Omar in the 3rd off a kick from Hector and Big Papi Julio in the 6th off another kick from Hector. Did I mention he was on fire? Final score: Diablitos 6, La Familia 3.
Looking over the stats on this one La Familia got hits from nearly everyone on their roster. Leading the way were Monica with 2 RKI’s and Jesse with his inside the park homerun (he just would not stop running on that kick until he scored!). Contributing hits were P.J., Jermaine, Joey, Erica, Kevin, Jacob and Mel. From Diablitos, beyond Hector, they had good production from Omar who went 3-3 at the plate with 2 runs scored, Ruben 2-3 with a run and an RKI and Paul 2-2 with an RKI. Additional hits came from Ana, Chris, Danny, Julio and Lizette. Now at 2-1 on the season Diablitos will take on the undefeated Expendables October 21 at 7:30pm. La Familia will get constitutional with the 21st Amendments in the early game at 6:30pm. See everyone out there!
Kickin’ It Around for October 7, 2010
Game 1: The Expendables vs. The Closers
RGVSSC KICKBALL – The first game of the night for October 7th would feature on early showdown of undefeated teams when The Expendables took on The Closers. With trying to stay perfect on the line, Expendables Mauro I got this Yo went 3-3 at the plate in addition to scoring the first run and kicking in the 4th one for an RKI* to lead his team to a 4-2 victory. You can never predict beforehand who is going to be victorious on any given night, that’s why they play the games!
Getting off to a slow start, The Closers would find themselves in an early hole giving up 2 runs to the Expendables in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. Scoring in the 2nd were Mauro and Leo on RKI singles from Lina and Omar respectively, with 3rd inning scoring coming from David and Danny on kicks from Eugene and Mauro. With the 4-0 lead The Expendables would play to hold on down the stretch as they were unable to put up any more runs on the scoreboard. The Closers attempted to rally and were able to score 2 runs in the 6th inning to threaten the lead when Pablo hit turbo to kick in Xavi and then score himself on the next kick from Ryan, making it 4-2. This though would be the final score as the innings ran out on them, after 7 innings completed it would be The Expendables 4, Closers 2.
Remaining in 1st place in the league at 2-0 with 4 points, The Expendables counted on kicks in this game from David, Danny, Eugene, Lina, Omar and Ashley along with Mauro’s aforementioned exploits. The Closers drop to 1-1 with 2 points with 5 more games to go. Getting successful kicks for them on the evening were Lauren, Jim Bob, Xavi (perfect at 3-3), Pablo and Ryan (both with 2 and a rikky apiece) and J.J. Next week they take on Angelitos at 6:30pm, whose halos should be well rested after having a bye week 2. The Expendables will take on Ball Busters at 7:00pm.
Game 2: Kegs N Legs vs. 21st Amendments
RGVSSC KICKBALL – For the 2nd game of the evening we would witness the debut of the 21st Amendments as they took on Kegs N Legs on field 1. In a game that was part kickball and part party like it was 1933, Kegs N Legs prohibited the 21st Amendments from scoring and ran away with a 9-0 victory. Plenty of sanctioned ball kicking going on in this one.
Despite their inexperience the Amendments would start off well in the 1st inning. Offensively they would get a walk by Sadie and kicks from Justin and Annie to narrowly miss scoring. In the bottom of the inning, defensively they would bend but not break by refusing any runs despite getting into a bases loaded situation. After 1 inning completed they’d hold precariously to a 0-0 score. That deadlock would quickly be shattered though when the Keggers tapped open the flood gates to score 3 runs in the 2nd. In this inning, with the bases loaded, Ashkan can and did kick successfully to bring in both Amanda and Clayton for runs 1 and 2. Run number 3 would come from Liana after a single from Bert to complete the inning. From there Kegs N Legs would put up 6 more runs in the game beginning with He’s on Fire Dante in the 4th inning and culminating with Clayton’s last score in the 6th. With the 21st Amendments going dry on the evening, they were still able to gain valuable experience with a game under their belts for the remainder of their schedule. Final score tonight: Kegs N Legs 9, 21st Amendments 0.
With the win Kegs N Legs moves to 1-1 and earned 2 points in the standings as they head into a bye week. Statistically for this game, without mentioning all 13 players, high marks go to Mike who went 3-3 kicking, Clayton for going 3-3 with 3 runs scored and an RKI, Ashkan at 3-3 with 3 RKI’s, Liana 2-3 with 2 runs and an RKI and Bert 2-3 with 2 RKI’s. It was truly a team effort for the Keggers. Offensively for the 21st Amendments, Annie led with 2 hits followed by Justin, Erika and Jetter getting singles. Next week they’ll kick for the fences again as they take on Bellini 7 at 8:00pm. See you Thursday!
Kickin’ It Around for September 30, 2010
Ay diablitos, the Fall 2010 season of Rio Grande Valley Sports and Social Club kickball has finally arrived! It’s on like ball busters so all you angelitos kick for the fences and have a great time with us every Thursday evening in Mission. Remember the games are all about having fun, from the beginning to the closers and good sportsmanship is not expendable. Therefore, bring out la familia, dust off your kegs and legs and have a bellini or seven in thanks for the 21st amendment. Following the games this season, happy hour specials will be available at our sponsor Buffalo Wings & Rings on South Shary Road (remember to wear your shirts). As evidenced by our first week’s slate of games, we are going to have a doozy of a season. Don’t miss it!
Game 1: The Closers (Ryan & Brian) vs. La Familia
RGVSSC KICKBALL – The Fall 2010 kickball season kicked off Thursday, September 30th with defending inaugural season champions The Closers taking on the returning La Familia. This defensive contest would go down to the wire and to the very last kicker before a winner could be determined. Eeking out the win were The Closers 2-1 behind a clutch game winning single from Adrian the Red Ball Barbarian with 2 outs down in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Ryan & Brian and the Closers would quickly score the first run of the season in the 1st inning on a kick by Victoria. Her single allowed Jamie to trot across home plate for the quick 1-0 lead. La Familia would respond with a score of their own in the 3rd inning to tie up the game. It came on an inside the park homerun by Get out of my Way P.J. I kick homeruns like every single day. Word. With runs hard to come by, from there La Familia would battle to fend off the brown shirted offense as long as possible. Defensively they stranded 2 Closers runners in the 4th inning, got out successfully from a bases loaded jam in the 5th and had pitcher Jesse tag or force out 3 runners in succession at 1st base in the 6th inning to keep the 1-1 tie into the final inning. Here in the end The Closers managed to do what their team name claims, they closed out the game with another run scored by Jaime. He got on base with a single, was advanced to 3rd after a pop out and a sacrifice force out from Victoria that set up Adrian as the last kicker of the game. Adrian took a straight-down-the-middle strike on the first roll and then coolly drilled the 2nd pitch in between 1st and 2nd base for a stand up single to win the game. Just like that, winner winner chicken dinner. Final score: The Closers 2, La Familia 1.
Offensively for La Familia they were led by P.J. who went 2-2 kicking with the homerun and getting hits in contribution were Jermaine, Joe, Jesse and Erica. The Closers earned 2 points with the victory and were led by Jaime who went 3-3 at the plate and scored both runs. Kicking 2 hits apiece for The Closers were Victoria, Tania and Celina. Next Thursday, October 7th The Closers will take on The Expendables at 6:30pm in a matchup of 1-0 teams while La Familia plays against the Ball Busters at 7:00pm. Be there!
Game 2: Kegs N Legs vs. Diablitos
RGVSSC KICKBALL – Sometimes your voice just needs to be heard. And what better place is there to get it all out than at an RGVSSC kickball game. In Game 2 of the evening for Thursday, September 30 the Diablitos took on Kegs N Legs in what would prove to be a very vocally hilarious yet well contested game. Between both the teams and the assembled peanut gallery in the stands the talking was non-stop comedy throughout all 7 innings, beginning with a certain one eyed pitcher who may or may not remember the game afterward. Fun is the name of the game my peeps! The ending score for this matchup would be 3-1 with Kegs N Legs succumbing late to the Diablitos.
After trading scoreless defensive innings in the 1st and 2nd, Diablitos would get on the board first in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Paul would make it across home plate for the 1-0 lead on a single from Hector. Kegs N Legs would tie up the game in the top of the 5th inning when El Barbie Preston kicked a double and then scored after a kick from Harris. The 1-1 tie would not last though as the appropriately red clad Diablitos would stick a pitchfork in them for 2 more runs in the 6th to take the victory. Scoring the first was Hector who stole home after a sacrifice out from Sara, with the second run coming from Huddle after good kick from Ana. Final score: Diablitos 3, Kegs N Legs 1.
Leading Kegs N Legs in the kicking department was Clayton going a perfect 2-2 on the night, with Preston, Nicole, Harris, Nick, Clarissa, Stan, Liana and Lucy all contributing kicks. For the Diablitos, Hector was perfect with his 3-3 kicking effort and then Huddle, Sara, Ana, Marissa and Danica all produced successful kicks for their team. With the win the Diablitos earn 2 points to go into the 2nd week of the season tied for 1st place. Next Thursday, October 7th they take on Bellini 7 at 8pm. Kegs N Legs will face off against the 21st Amendments in their debut at 7:30pm. See you there!
